Principal & Chief Brand Architect
Mike began his career in marketing and advertising at Chicago-based S&H Travel where, for 5 years, he ran incentive travel programs and took groups to just about every major destination in the world. From there, he moved to LA and the advertising agency business, first with Chiat/Day and eventually the corporate identity firm of Bass/Yager, where his passion for brand was ignited. He saw first-hand the powerful effect marketing can have — especially when it truly connects a brand with its audience.
Mike has since accumulated over three decades of experience working with well known brands such as The Dial Corporation, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Hyatt Hotels and Pepsi Cola. He’s also run advertising agencies and managed entire marketing departments at companies like drugstore.com and Garden Botanika, where he helped take the company through a successful IPO as it grew from 10 Seattle-area stores to almost 350 throughout the US.
Mike's recent work has been focused on helping new and mid-stage brands define what they stand for and move to their next-stage of growth. He especially likes to work with companies making a difference in the world, through alternative energy. Even in the midst of almost daily change in marketing, Mike has continued to learn, grow and leverage knowledge to help clients succeed. He loves to figure out what makes people do what they do.
Mike lives outside Seattle and in his free time he likes to play guitar and golf, read (he always has a novel going), do crossword puzzles and go on walks with his daughter's bulldog.
Founder & Chief Digital Strategist
With 20 years of evolving experience in digital marketing, few others have as deep exposure in the interactive space. In the world of agencies where self-promotion often trumps capability, Eric’s most significant accomplishment is his reputation for integrity, intelligence and the hard work his team delivers on behalf of clients.
Eric started Confluence as a next phase in his career after 6 years as the co-founder and driving force behind Point It Inc., one of Seattle’s largest paid search agencies managing over $30 million in client media dollars annually. Past client work includes oversight of search marketing programs for Microsoft, RealNetworks, Hewlett-Packard, CISCO Systems, and over 130 others in both B2B and B2C markets.
A particular source of pride is the ascendance of former team members to search marketing leadership roles at firms such as Omniture, RealNetworks, Marchex, Razorfish, Cafepress, The Cobalt Group, and others.
Eric began his career at Fluke Corporation (now Danaher, nyse: dhr) where he was exposed to the possibility of the Internet.
Eric holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Marketing from San Diego State University and lives happily in Seattle.
Dorota UmenoPartner & Senior Strategist
Dorota has deep and diverse experience as a manager of products, services and people across various organizations, environments and industries. She is a consummate marketing strategist, brand manager, copywriter and usability advocate.
Dorota was bitten by the Internet bug in early 1994 when she joined the Network of East-West Women, a pioneering not-for-profit that fostered the emergence of civil society in post-Soviet Central & Eastern Europe by providing laptop computers, Internet access and training to grassroots women’s organizations across the region. Hooked on helping others and excited about the power of technology and online communication, Dorota went on to completing her MBA in Marketing & Information Management. She then cemented what she learned though work experiences at Johnson & Johnson, CardioVations (cardiac surgery devices), Strategix Vision (industrial design), and NeoMed, a medical device company she helped start with her husband Marc.
Dorota is an entrepreneur at heart and knows what it takes to bring a product or service from idea to market. She likes a good challenge, especially if it involves marketing, thinking "big" and number crunching. With that in mind she joined Confluence as "Employee #2" in the summer of 2009.
Dorota lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and when she has spare time — which is not often, since she has three children aged 10, 7 and 5 — she likes to cook, do Yoga, read fantasy novels and enjoy the outdoors.
